Understanding YouTube ad earnings

How YouTube ad revenue actually works: CPM vs RPM and the 45% cut

Advertisers pay a CPM, the cost per 1,000 ad impressions. But you never keep all of it. YouTube takes 45% of ad revenue and passes 55% to the creator. What you actually earn per 1,000 views is your RPM, revenue per mille, and it already reflects that split.

RPM is also lower than CPM for a second reason: not every view is monetized. Ad blockers, viewers who skip before an ad plays, and content that is not ad-eligible all mean only a slice of your total views ever earn money. This calculator states RPM as the amount that actually reaches you and lets you set what share of views are monetized, so the estimate is honest rather than rosy.

Why niche and RPM drive earnings far more than raw views

Two channels with the same view count can earn wildly different amounts, because advertisers value some audiences far more than others. A finance or business channel can command an RPM many times higher than a gaming or entertainment channel, since the viewers are worth more to advertisers chasing high-value customers.

That is why raw views are a weak predictor of income on their own. A smaller channel in a high-RPM niche often out-earns a much larger channel in a low-RPM one. When you change the niche in this tool, watch the range move far more than it does when you nudge the view count, that gap is the whole point.

Why sponsorships and products usually beat ad revenue

For most established creators, YouTube ad revenue is the smallest slice of the pie. Brand sponsorships, affiliate deals, channel memberships, and the creator's own products or courses typically earn more, often several times more, than ads alone. Ad revenue is the floor, not the ceiling.

So treat this number as a baseline for the ad portion, then think about what one loyal audience is worth beyond it. The creators who earn the most are the ones who turn attention into offers, and who distribute content consistently enough to keep that attention growing.

FAQ

Good to know.

How much does YouTube pay per 1000 views?

It depends heavily on your niche. After YouTube's 45% cut, creators typically keep an RPM of roughly $2 to $6 per 1,000 monetized views in gaming or entertainment, and $8 to $25 in finance or business. Remember that not every view is monetized, so per-view earnings across all views are lower than the headline RPM.

How much do YouTubers make?

Ad revenue alone ranges from a few hundred dollars a month for a mid-size channel to well into five or six figures for large channels in high-RPM niches. But ads are usually the smallest income source. Most full-time creators earn more from sponsorships, memberships, affiliates, and their own products than from YouTube ads.

Does anything I enter leave my browser?

No. The whole calculation runs locally in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, stored, or shared. This tool is also not affiliated with YouTube.
