Understanding your TikTok engagement rate

How TikTok engagement rate is calculated

On TikTok the standard method is engagement by views: add up the likes, comments, shares, and saves on a video, divide by the number of views that video got, and multiply by 100. That gives you a percentage that says how many of the people who actually watched went on to interact.

It is measured per video rather than across your whole account because on TikTok a single clip can be seen by far more people than follow you. Views are the honest denominator, they reflect who the algorithm actually put the video in front of.

Why TikTok differs from follower-based platforms

On Instagram, LinkedIn, or X, engagement rate is usually measured against followers, because reach roughly tracks your audience size. TikTok breaks that assumption. Its For You feed pushes videos to non-followers constantly, so a creator with 2,000 followers can rack up 500,000 views on one clip.

Dividing that clip's likes by 2,000 followers would produce a wild, meaningless number. Dividing by views keeps it grounded and comparable. That is why a good follower-based rate and a good view-based rate look nothing alike, and why you should not compare a TikTok rate to an Instagram one.

How to actually raise it

Chase shares and saves, not just likes. A share means the video was worth sending to someone and a save means it was worth keeping, and TikTok weights those heavily when deciding whether to push a clip further. Videos that teach a quick thing or say something worth repeating earn them.

Hook hard in the first second and give people a reason to comment. Watch time and comments feed the same signal loop, so a strong opening and a genuine question do more for your rate than posting more filler that nobody reacts to.

FAQ

Good to know.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

Measured by views, a good TikTok engagement rate is usually in the low-to-mid single digits. Rates around 3 to 6 percent are healthy, and anything above roughly 9 to 10 percent is excellent. This tool benchmarks your video against a typical band for its view count so the number has context.

Is TikTok engagement measured by views or followers?

By views. TikTok's For You feed sends videos to far more people than follow you, so views are the honest denominator. We add up likes, comments, shares, and saves, then divide by the video's views. That is different from Instagram or LinkedIn, which are typically measured against followers.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The whole calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
